PKU trio™ is a powdered phenylalanine (phe)-free formula for use in the dietary management of Phenylketonuria (PKU). It provides a trio of macronutrients: protein equivalent from essential and non-essential amino acids, carbohydrate, and fat (including docosahexaenoic acid – DHA) in addition to a range of vitamins and minerals.
What is PKU trio™?
PKU trio is designed to support the transition from phe-free infant formula from 1 year of age and may be used throughout life. It provides more options for when a higher calorie PKU formula may be needed such as during pregnancy and lactation. It is available in Unflavored and Vanilla flavor.
PKU trio comes in a 400 gram can, with 2 level scoops providing 10 grams of protein equivalent (PE).
What are the benefits of changing from phe-free infant formula to PKU trio™ at 1 year of age?
PKU trio can be concentrated to support nutrition needs from 1 year of age in a smaller volume than phe-free infant formula. Avoiding large volumes of phe-free formula, while still meeting protein requirements for growth, can help with encouraging appetite and establishing healthy and age-appropriate eating behaviors.
How much PKU trio™ does my child need to drink?
The amount of PKU trio your child needs each day will depend on a variety of factors including their age, weight, and nutrition needs. Your child’s registered dietitian will advise you on how much PKU trio is right for your child, and how you should prepare it.
How do I prepare PKU trio™?
Measure the required number of scoops and add the amount of water recommended by your child’s registered dietitian.
To prepare 10 g PE:
- Measure 2 level scoops into glass/mixing cup.
- Add approximately 135 ml (4.5 fl oz) of cold water.
- Mix well until all of the powder is dissolved.
- Drink immediately.
Any prepared formula should be refrigerated and used within 24 hours. Re-mix before use.
Unopened: PKU trio should be stored in a cool dry place. Once opened, use within 1 month.
