What is PKU start™?

A powdered phenylalanine (phe)-free infant formula for use in the dietary management of Phenylketonuria (PKU). It contains other essential and non-essential amino acids, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins, minerals, arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). PKU start is designed as a phe-free infant formula from birth. It is available in Unflavored.

How much PKU start™ does my child need to drink?

The amount of PKU start your child needs each day will depend on a variety of factors including their age, weight, and nutrition needs. Your child’s registered dietitian will advise you on how much PKU start is right for your child, and how you should prepare it.

How do I store PKU start?

  • Unopened: PKU start should be stored in a cool, dry place.
  • Once opened: Use within 3 weeks.
  • Always replace lid after use.

How do I prepare PKU start?

Measure the required number of scoops and add the amount of water recommended by your child’s registered dietitian.

The standard dilution of 21 kcal/fl oz or 0.69 kcal/ml is
made by adding 1 level scoop of PKU start (4.7 g) to
30 ml (1 fl oz) of water. Use only the scoop provided
in the can or a gram scale for greatest accuracy.

Do not reheat PKU start once feeding has started. Do not heat PKU start in a microwave as uneven heating may occur and
could cause a burn. Do not boil PKU start. Infants should be supervised at all times when feeding.

USE UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION.

PKU start must only be consumed by individuals with proven
PKU in conjunction with breast milk or infant formula to provide
the phenylalanine, fluid and general nutritional requirements of
the infant in quantities as advised by a clinician or dietitian.

Not for intravenous use. For enteral use only. Not for use as a sole source of nutrition.
