What is PKU start™?
PKU start is an amino acid-based powdered phenylalanine-free infant formula containing other essential and non-essential amino acids, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins, minerals, arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It is suitable for infants and toddlers with PKU.
How much PKU start does my infant or toddler need to drink?
The amount of PKU start your child needs each day will depend on a variety of factors including their age, weight, and nutrition needs. Your child’s registered dietitian will advise you on how much PKU start is right for your child, and how you should prepare it.
How do I store PKU start?
- Unopened: Store opened and unopened cans in a cool dry place.
- Once opened: Tightly cover open can and use within 3 weeks.
- Avoid extreme storage temperatures.
How do I prepare PKU start?
It is important for your infant or toddler's health that you carefully follow the instructions for the preparation, use and storage of PKU start. The standard dilution of 21 kcal/fl oz or 0.69 kcal/mL is made by adding 1 level scoop of PKU start (4.7 g) to 30 mL (1 fl oz) of water. Use only the scoop provided in the can or a gram scale for greatest accuracy. Always wash your hands and utensils before preparing formula. Boiling of tap or bottled water and sterilization of utensils is recommended. Your registered dietitian will advise if it is not required. If boiling water, bring to a rolling boil for 1 minute and cool before preparing formula.

Use and storage of PKU start: Powdered infant formula is not sterile. Freshly prepared formula is best. Only if necessary, refrigerate freshly prepared formula and use contents within 24 hours. NOTE: Refrigerator temperatures should be maintained between 35-40°F (2-4°C). Re-shake bottle before feeding. WARNING: Do not use a microwave as uneven heating may occur and could cause a burn. Do not boil PKU start.
USE UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION.
PKU start must only be consumed by individuals with proven
PKU in conjunction with human milk or standard infant formula to provide
the phenylalanine, fluid and general nutritional requirements of
